Forestry Technician
This position performs a variety of routine and frequently complex tasks involving techniques and practices relating to timber and silviculture. Successful accomplishment of the following assignments supports field projects and program planning activities for the unit. Timber Independently applies silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber. Brings to the attention of responsible individuals situations on the ground that are inconsistent with guidelines. Acts as a certified timber cruiser. Independently applies the instructions issued in a cruise plan. Takes and records tree measurements, assesses quality, and determines defect. Prepares and computer processes cruise data. Observes and reports areas of possible archeological significance, and sightings of sensitive, threatened or endangered wildlife species. Traverses harvest unit boundaries, road locations, and determines area. Silviculture Inspects silvicultural contract work (e.g., genetic tree improvement, planting, thinning, seeding, site preparation) for compliance with contract. Explains steps necessary for compliance to contractor and reports violations to COR. May act as COR on various silvicultural contracts. Examines sapling and larger stands to collect and record data on stocking, density, condition, insects, disease, site index, and ground vegetation. Makes recommendations for areas requiring remedial action. Examines plantations to assess numbers of tree seedlings present, condition, and growth and survival rates, and evidence of animal, insect or disease damage. Selects prospective parent seed trees using established procedures to determine which trees have superior growth characteristics. Determines the relative abundance and species of seed cones by observing the developing cone and pollen buds. Operates chainsaws and other power equipment to implement thinning, planting, pruning, fire suppression and other silvicultural projects. Follows silvicultural prescriptions and directs work to accomplish timber stand objectives. Performs maintenance and cleaning of power equipment and hand tools. As assigned, performs resource work in other areas, such as timber stand thinning, pruning, inspecting wildlife contracts, fire suppression, or burning slash. (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level. Specialized experience is defined as:

Inspects silvicultural contract work (e.g., genetic tree improvement, planting, thinning, seeding, site preparation) for compliance with contract. Operates chainsaws and other power equipment to implement thinning, planting, pruning, fire suppression and other silvicultural projects. Follows silvicultural prescriptions and directs work to accomplish timber stand objectives. -OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. -OR A combination of education and experience listed above.
